History
The State Engineering University of Armenia, former
Yerevan Polytechnic, is the leader of national technological education
and one of the leaders among former Soviet Polytechnics. Over 90,000 graduates
during the 67-year life, many of them today are in industrial leadership
of the Republic. Our graduates have succeeded also in other areas of human
activities, one of them - Robert Kocharian, President of Republic of Armenia.
Being founded in 1933 with 2 departments and 107 students,
our University had grown into the largest higher educational institution
of Republic with campuses in Gyoumri, Vanadzor, Goris and Kapan, thus
involving in its sphere all industrial regions. In 1991 it was reorganized
into the State Engineering University of Armenia. In 1980-85 the University
reached its peak with more than 20,000 students, and more than 80 specialties
taught.
The University today has over 6,000 students (after
the collapse of Soviet system, according to new realities in the demand
of engineering workforce, the University sharply decreased its student
body). However SEUA had succeeded to keep its academic staff - about 1,000
full-time professors, most of them carrying doctoral degrees. The 39 majors
offered for Bachelor of Engineering degree and 13 majors offered for Master
of Engineering and Doctoral degrees cover almost all areas of engineering
and technology. In the frames of realization of University's Strategic
Plan, SEUA has reformed its administration and management structure and
revised the curricula, accepted the internationally adopted 3-level model
of University education, and offers now degrees at Bachelor’s, Master’s,
and Doctoral level in various technical and professional disciplines.
The University has a Foreign Students’ Division with instruction in English
and Russian. There is also a network of continuing education units and
computer training courses at the central and regional campuses.
